Exhibition Opening - An evening with Jessie Turner

Thursday 10 July 2025
Join us during NAIDOC week for our Exhibition opening & Artist Talk, ' How animals see death' by Jessie Turner. 'How animals see death' examines death-related behaviours and species-specific rituals in animals, challenging the long-held assumption that non-human species lack an understanding of death. This belief has long been used to position humans as uniquely intelligent or spiritually superior reinforcing the notion that consciousness is a distinctly human trait. Drawing on anecdotal observation, scientific research, and speculative thinking, this series seeks to unsettle this narrative and expand how we perceive animal consciousness and responses to death. Using still-life photography, a medium historically linked to death through its stillness and spectral quality, the work brings to light the emotional, cognitive, and even spiritual dimensions of how animals experience death. Jessie Turner is a Nari Nari and Wotjobaluk artist living and making work on Wurundjeri land.

Layers of Country - An Evening with Artist Simone Thomson

Tuesday 8 July 2025
Join us for a special exhibition opening event for 'Layers of Country' with Simone Thomson and enjoy a traditional Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, didgeridoo performance and artist talk. Simone is a Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Yorta-Yorta woman through her mother, and Irish and Scottish through my father. Her people are river people. Her deep connection to Country — to the sacred waterways of Birrarung and Dhungala, to the River Redgum trees and rainforests, the skies and mountains — were born before her physical self and are at the heart of her practice. “We are people of the earth; we are people of Country. Our heartbeat can be felt in the gentle vibrations underfoot, that consistent thudding of an ancient, timeless pulse. This is the truth of the land. It holds secrets and stories and wants to be remembered. These works reflect the dimensionality and spirit of the land, and the essence of ancestral knowledge passed down over thousands of years.” Simone Thomson

Monash Carols by Candlelight

Sunday 3 December 2023
CAROLS POSTPONED UNTIL– SUNDAY 3 DECEMBER We regret to inform you that we have had to make the decision to postpone this evening’s Carols By Candlelight event for 24 hours, with it now taking place tomorrow, Sunday 3 December. We have continued to monitor the weather at Jells Park throughout the week, however today’s unexpected heavier rain/storm has now made the event unsafe to continue for both attendees and performers and the site needs the additional time to drain. We understand that many people who were planning to attend this evening will not be able to and we’re sorry about that. But hopefully a lot of our community will be able to make it tomorrow night. We are incredibly grateful to our performers and Carols cast for their flexibility and willingness to ensure we can deliver our Carols event to the community. Thank you for your understanding and we hope to see you tomorrow evening.
