Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre

The Phillip Island Community Adult Learning Centre (PICAL) is a not for profit community-based organisation providing a space to meet, socialise, learn, create and access information about local services. PICAL provides services such as emergency food relief, counselling, free hearing tests, employment services and a Centrelink Agency. We also have a number of community spaces available for hire for meetings, training, social gatherings and community groups

    Join us in the community garden and learn how to recycle timber pallets to make your own garden planter boxes. You will be guided in the use of basic hand tools such as saws and drills to create your own take home planter!

    This course covers the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a hand-held chainsaw and maintain it in working condition. It also includes cross-cutting fallen timber using safe cutting techniques.     This 7 week course is designed to show you basic computer skills, email and the internet. Each week, you will be guided through a new process and an opportunity for one-on-one tuition in order to build confidence and skills. This course is perfect for adults with little or no previous computer experience. Date: Monday 1 Feb for 7 consecutive weeks | Time: 1pm - 4pm Duration: 7 sessions.     You'll be cafe job-ready with this 6-hour introductory barista skills course. Local chef & coffee connoisseur Raj Ruthi, owner of 11-eleven Phillip Island, will guide you through the fundamentals of extraction, the different types of coffee drinks, milk texturing, machine cleaning and maintenance.     This course provides participants the knowledge, practical experiences & skills to progress into a horticulture related employment or further education pathway. Core components include: recognising plants, treating weeds, treating plant pests, diseases and disorders, soil testing and conditioning, undertaking propagation activities, OH&S, and assisting with landscape construction work. Date: Thurs 4 Feb for 7 consecutive weeks Time: 10am - 1pm

    A combination of meditation & pottery. Every class begins with a short guided meditation that flows into designing & making a ceramic creation. Learn some basic pottery skills such as coiling, slab building & pinch pot making whilst mindfully focusing on the process. All materials supplied including one take home piece. Topics include: Microsoft Office, Zoom, internet browsers & search engines, what is a digital footprint & online safety plus some social media basics. The first 3 sessions are delivered face-to-face to consolidate your basic computer skills, then the following 4 sessions are conducted online via Zoom so participants can experience & become confident communicating & learning in an online classroom.

    Provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies and to perform CPR in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines. CPR at floor level on adult manikin is a mandatory requirement. Statement of Attainment will be issued by National First Aid RTO 398. Also suitable for anyone who has a current CPR certificate needing to do an annual update of skills & knowledge. Date: Sat 6 Feb | Time: 9am - 1pm
