Quixotica Art Space

Quixotica is a unique creative space in Cooroy, Queensland, owned by long standing ceramic artist and educator, Rowley Drysdale. It is where Rowley creates all his work and holds regular ceramic workshops. The property features a number of anagama and gas fired kilns, several studios, artists’ accommodation, extensive gardens and a waterside gallery. It regularly hosts visiting international and interstate artists, who conduct a variety of visual arts workshops.

  • Between Thursday 20 August 2020 and Thursday 24 September 2020
    Running for six weeks, these classes offer customised tuition for your individual skill level. Whether you are new to ceramics, or want to develop existing skills, these sessions will be tailored to your needs. Rowley will provide personal tuition in groups of just six students each term, focussing on throwing and assembling techniques. This is a great opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s most experienced ceramic artists and educators.

    This weekend workshop, run by well known ceramic artist Rowley Drysdale, describes how to produce your own glazes from basic minerals, sharing specific glaze recipes to complement your clay pieces. A multitude of glaze application processes and other surface techniques will be discussed and demonstrated.

Rowley will show you the intricacies of throwing and assembling a tea pot, as well as techniques to enhance your skills in making tea cups, tea bowls and other items used in a tea ceremony. Whether you are new to wheel throwing or would simply like to brush up your techniques in your existing ceramics practise, this workshop will accelerate your learning.

    If you are already familiar with mixing glazes and their key components, then you are ready to venture into creating your own unique glaze formulas. This workshop will also cover the formulation of clay bodies from raw materials, adding another dimension to your clay work. Rowley will share his extensive knowledge of kiln management, including loading your kiln for best outcomes, generating reduction and oxidation atmospheres, and timing the ramp, soak and cooling cycles in your kiln..
