A course for Anaesthetic Nurses and Anaesthetic Technicians. Recognised CPD by ANZCA for Anaesthetic Emergency Response “Cardiac Arrest” modules in Paediatric Anaesthesia. Facilitated by The Royal Children’s Hospital Simulation Program and the Department of Anaesthesia. Course Content: Paediatric Advanced Life Support/Cardiac Arrest Module: This 3.5 hour module is an ANZCA CPD accredited Emergency Response Module, including skills and simulation based education in Advanced Paediatric Life Support and team training during paediatric anaesthesia emergency response scenarios. Crisis in Paediatric Anaesthesia Program

Friday 23 October 2026
A course for Anaesthetists, Anaesthetic Trainees and GP Anaesthetists. Recognised CPD by ANZCA for Anaesthetic Emergency Response “Cardiac Arrest” and “CICO” modules in Paediatric Anaesthesia. The program includes two modules: 1. Paediatric Advanced Life Support/Cardiac Arrest Module: This 3.5 hour module is an ANZCA CPD accredited Emergency Response Module, including skills and simulation based education in Advanced Paediatric Life Support and team training during paediatric anaesthesia emergency response scenarios. 2. CICO module: The 4 hour CICO (Can't Intubate, Can't Oxygenate) module is ANZCA CPD accredited Emergency Response Module. It introduces basic CICO concepts and techniques for those who have not attended CICO courses before, and also highlights the differences between the management of the CICO emergency in children and adults. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss theory, , and practice techniques on paediatric tracheal models.

Day 1 and 2 The two-day program covers foundational simulation theory, principles of educational design, and strategies for creating a safe, supportive, and psychologically secure learning environment. Participants will develop capability in scenario design and development, as well as explore a range of debriefing methodologies to enhance learner reflection and performance improvement. Day 3 Application Intensive (Optional): This advanced workshop is designed for participants who have completed the two-day Simulation Train the Trainer Program. It builds on the participants foundational knowledge gained by day 1 & 2, by providing hands-on practice, expert mentorship, and structured peer feedback to further refine facilitation skills. The program begins by developing core skills in: • Scenario design • Applying a range of debriefing methodologies • Understanding simulation technology components and moulage design To consolidate learning, participants will then engage in three interprofessional simulation scenarios, rotating through the roles of facilitator, participant, and observer across medical, nursing, and allied health disciplines. These scenarios apply principles of team reflexivity to strengthen communication, collaboration, and patient safety. Each participant will receive tailored coaching and feedback from the RCH Simulation Team throughout the program. DATES: Wednesday 11th March, Thursday 12th March & Friday 13th March 2026. This advanced workshop is designed for participants who have completed the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) 2-day Simulation Train the Trainer program. Participants will refine their skills with hands-on experience, mentorship from expert simulation educators, and peer feedback. The day will focus on: • Simulation scenario design • Technical facilitation and moulage • Effective pre-briefing, debriefing, and co-debriefing • Psychological safety and team reflexivity Participants will engage in 3 scenarios in mixed teams (medical, nursing, allied health), developing team reflexivity to improve patient safety and communication in real-world clinical settings. Coaching from the RCH simulation team will guide each participant's development. VEMS (Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation)

The RCH Simulation Team are facilitating education sessions on how to run a VEMS (Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation) sessions. VEMS can be used for communication or deteriorating patient training, and/or running through guidelines and protocols etc. This simulation education modality is easily facilitated by educators in their department and has been used to good effect where lots of time, space, and/or equipment, are not available.

Please note that sessions will be combined for clinical and non-clinical staff in 2024. This course is generally directed at RCH processes but is generalisable to external participants if they wish to attend. Exposure to challenging events involving extremely sick children, or non-clinical events involving staff or patient and family interactions, can be distressing. This course aims to provide a framework on how to facilitate immediate “guided reflection” (Psychological First Aid-PFA) around challenging events in order to provide support for staff involved. Medical, Nursing, Allied Health, and Non-Clinical staff who may be required to facilitate such sessions are encouraged to attend.

Group Response to Illness in Paediatric Simulation

Between Tuesday 20 May 2025 and Wednesday 19 November 2025
GRIPS - Group Response to Illness in Paediatric Simulation Come to GRIPS and learn how to manage the deteriorating patient with an effective team response. This course runs from 08:00-16:30 and focus on the patient who has been admitted to the ward and deteriorates over a period of time. Participants will concentrate on the recognition and management of the deteriorating patient with training around human factors to improve teamwork and clinical decision making. The course includes: • Participation in inter-professional simulated scenarios. • Training in human factors to improve our ability to work as a team in difficult clinical situations. • Clinical skills workshops that are relevant to the theme of the day. • Debriefing and discussion to explore the clinical problems and the team performance. To simulate real clinical situations, this course requires an interprofessional team. Therefore, places are limited to allow for appropriate ratios of of medical and nursing/AH staff.

Neonatal Difficult Airway

Between Wednesday 9 April 2025 and Wednesday 12 November 2025
Facilitated by The Royal Children’s Hospital Simulation Program and the Department of Neonatal Medicine, this is a course for Neonatologists and Neonatal Nurses, General Paediatricians, Trainees, and anyone who may potentially be faced with the challenge of managing a difficult neonatal airway. Working with Interpreters

Between Monday 3 March 2025 and Monday 27 October 2025
This 3.5 hour course seeks to help enhance clinicians understanding of how to work collaboratively with interpreters in a healthcare setting. Suitable for any medical, nursing or allied health clinicians in RCH wanting to enhance their skills and knowledge in the area of working with interpreters. Course includes: - An overview of the different types of interpreting, along with various cultural and language considerations to bear in mind when working with interpreters. - Discussion on how to prepare for an interpreted session, including pre-briefing the interpreter. - Communication considerations during an interpreted session and how to trouble shoot if communication challenges arise. - Learn the TEACH back method to ensure families are understanding your key messages. - Participation in inter-professional simulated scenarios, with a trained interpreter. - Debriefing and discussion post simulation to identify and explore key learnings for integration in to future practice.

Paediatric Sepsis Program

Between Tuesday 8 April 2025 and Tuesday 7 October 2025
Come to the Sepsis Sim and practise how to manage the child with sepsis. This full day course will run from 08:00-16:30 and will focus around the recognition and management of sepsis in a patient who has been admitted to the ward. Participants will also have training around human factors to improve teamwork and clinical decision-making. The course includes: • Clinical skills workshops (including lumbar puncture and obtaining intraosseous access) relevant to the management of paediatric sepsis. • Training in human factors to improve our ability to work as a team when managing patients with sepsis. • Participation in inter-professional simulated scenarios. • Debriefing and discussion to explore the clinical problems and team performance. To simulate real clinical situations, this course will require an interprofessional team. Therefore, places are limited for medical and nursing/allied health.

Working with Interpreters

This 3.5 hour course will seek to help enhance clinicians understanding of how to work collaboratively with interpreters in a healthcare setting. It is suitable for any allied health clinician in RCH who is wanting to enhance their skills and knowledge in the area of working with interpreters. The course includes: - An overview of the different types of interpreting, along with various cultural and language considerations to bear in mind when working with interpreters. - Discussion on how to prepare for an interpreted session, including pre-briefing the interpreter. - Communication considerations during an interpreted session and how to trouble shoot if communication challenges arise. - Learn the TEACH back method to ensure families are understanding your key messages. - Participation in inter-professional simulated scenarios, with a trained interpreter. - Debriefing and discussion post simulation to identify and explore key learnings for integration in to future practice.
