RPH Research Foundation

For more than 40 years the RPH Research Foundation has been funding some of the greatest minds to unlock discoveries and improve the quality of healthcare available to all Western Australians. Medical advances simply would not be possible without research that underpins our health system, from disease prevention to improving diagnoses and treatments. Through our Community Health Talks, we share insights from some of the researchers supported by the RPH Research Foundation.

Community Health Talk – High Blood Pressure

Thursday 21 May 2026
High blood pressure affects millions of people and is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. What many people do not realise is how closely the kidneys and blood pressure are linked, and how problems in one can directly affect the other. In this talk, Professor Markus Schlaich will explain the important role the kidneys play in regulating blood pressure and why kidney health is essential for overall cardiovascular wellbeing. He will discuss common risk factors, early warning signs, and practical steps people can take to better manage their blood pressure and protect their long-term health. You can have your blood pressure checked for free at this event.

Community Health Talk – Coronary Heart Disease

Wednesday 24 June 2026
Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of serious illness, yet many people don’t realise that family history is one of the strongest predictors of developing it at a younger age. The good news is that there is a lot you can do. Simple health checks and everyday lifestyle changes can significantly reduce your risk, even if heart disease runs in your family. Join Dr Nick Lan to learn what your family history really means for your heart health, how to recognise early warning signs, and how new research like the CASCADE-MI study is helping improve early detection and prevention.

Community Health Talk – Leukaemia

Wednesday 19 August 2026
Leukaemia is a type of blood cancer that develops when abnormal white blood cells grow uncontrollably in the bone marrow. It can appear without warning, or it may develop in people who already have chronic bone marrow conditions. More than 50,000 Australians live with the uncertainty of knowing they are at increased risk of progressing to leukaemia. One of the biggest challenges to treating leukaemia is early detection. Current tests cannot detect the presence of these abnormal cells before symptoms develop. Once symptoms appear, treatment becomes more difficult. A/Professor Hun Chuah and his team are working on a promising new approach to identify leukaemia much earlier. They have developed a highly sensitive WA-invented laboratory test that can detect tiny genetic changes in blood cells, even when only 1 in 100,000 cells is affected. This breakthrough technology has the potential to enable earlier diagnosis and intervention, particularly for people with existing bone marrow disorders. Join A/Professor Chuah to learn how this WA-developed innovation could change the future of leukaemia detection and improve outcomes for those at risk.

Community Health Talk – Hearing Loss and Dementia

Wednesday 17 September 2025
Join Dr Dona Jayakody, Head of Brain and Hearing at the Ear Science Institute Australia and Career Advancement Fellow at RPH Research Foundation, as she delves into cutting-edge research exploring the critical link between hearing loss and dementia. Dr Jayakody will discuss how hearing aids could play a pivotal role in delaying or even preventing cognitive decline in older adults based on the recent “Hearcog” clinical trial. Hearing loss, which affects 1.5 billion people globally, is a leading cause of disability, with 90% of cases linked to aging. With dementia projected to triple by 2050, the findings from this trial have the potential to shape clinical practices and health policies worldwide. This talk will provide attendees with insights into why addressing hearing loss is not just a quality-of-life issue but a global public health priority.

Community Health Talk – Strong and Steady

Wednesday 23 July 2025
Join Dr Marc Sim, RPH Research Foundation’s Career Advancement Fellow, for a fascinating and practical talk on how to prevent falls as we age. Did you know that about one in three Australians over 65 experiences a fall each year, often leading to serious injuries? While there's no magic pill to prevent falls, Dr Sim’s research shows that what we eat, and exercise may be the key to prevent subsequent falls. Learn more about how eating veggies, especially leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli—can help strengthen muscles and bones, lowering the risk of falls. Dr Sim will also share insights on how exercise and nutrition work together to keep us strong and steady on our feet. Join us for this free community health talk to learn more about this research and how exercise and diet can help reduce your fall risk.

Community Health Talk – Cellular Therapy

Tuesday 17 June 2025
Every year, 2,500 Australians are diagnosed with Myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. While patients undergo multiple rounds of chemoimmunotherapy to control their symptoms, most myeloma patients survive less than six years from their diagnosis. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells which target B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA) protein on myeloma cells are a new and highly effective cellular therapy in patients who have exhausted all other treatment options. Join us for this free community health talk to learn about A/Professor Agnes Yong and her team’s research aims to help Western Australian patients access this life-saving treatment at Royal Perth Hospital.

Community Health Talk – High Blood Pressure

Wednesday 14 May 2025
High blood pressure (BP) and atrial fibrillation often occur concomitantly and are often not easy to detect. Novel measurement devices will help to measure both BP and heart rhythm simultaneously and help to detect these silent killers more frequently. Join us to hear from world-renowned hypertension specialist, Professor Markus Schlaich, to learn how high BP causes heart rhythm disturbances, how they can be detected, and how best to treat them. Professor Schlaich leads a team of dedicated researchers who run numerous clinical trials and research studies every year to optimise treatments and improve health outcomes. You can have your blood pressure checked for free at this event.
