The Shire of Moora, in conjunction with Books in the Brewery, present an evening with three of WA's finest crime writers — including two winners from the WA Premier's Book Awards 2025.
Hosted by Toby Halsey, Louise Wolhuter (Shadows of Winter Robins, An Afterlife for Rosemary Lamb), Kate Emery (My Family and Other Suspects, A Murder is Going Down), and Alex Dook (Gunpowder Creek) will take part in a crime-fuelled panel conversation about their books, their process, and the world of crime fiction — with plenty of time for questions from the floor.
Doors open before 6pm so come early, grab a drink, enjoy some nibbles, and have a chat before the panel kicks off. All three authors will have copies of their books available for purchase and signing on the night.

Louise Wolhuter
Louise Wolhuter grew up in northern England before settling in Perth to raise a family. She writes what she calls "twisty fiction" — stories about lives that creep up on people and the secrets hidden beneath the surface. Her novel Shadows of Winter Robins (2024) has been shortlisted for the WA Premier's Book Awards 2025 in the Fiction Book of the Year category. She is also the author of An Afterlife for Rosemary Lamb (2022). By day, Louise works as an Education Assistant in a primary school, which means early mornings and school holidays are prime writing time.
Kate Emery
Kate Emery is a YA author and journalist from Perth, Western Australia. Her debut cosy murder mystery My Family and Other Suspects (Allen & Unwin, 2024) won the WA Premier's Book Award Book of the Year 2025, the ABIA for 13+ readers, and the YA category at the Indie Book Awards. Think Agatha Christie with a teenage detective, a dysfunctional family holiday, and a whole lot of wit. Her follow-up, A Murder is Going Down, was published in 2025.
Alex Dook
Alex Dook is a writer based in Perth, Western Australia. After fifteen years writing novels and screenplays, he landed a two-book deal with Echo Publishing — and his debut was worth the wait. Gunpowder Creek is a cat-and-mouse outback thriller set across the sprawling WA interior, described by reviewers as high-octane, heart-thumping, and impossible to put down. His influences include Patricia Highsmith, Garry Disher, Adrian McKinty, Mick Herron, and Jane Harper.

Aaron have performed together as KOKOMO - as far back as the defence of the America's Cup here in Perth in the late 80's - and the opening of the then new Burswood Casino. KOKOMO back then was a 6 piece unit and played as Resident band at the Casino for the first 6 months after its opening.
A further One year residency at THE SUNSET CLUB at the then new 'Hilary's Marina' followed, (as a 5 piece unit), supporting and backing many international acts.
Aaron has performed with many local Perth bands over the years (The Statesmen - Beatnix - ICE ) as well as being with the English hit recording group 'THE TREMELOES' for 2 years in the mid 70’s.

The Moora Hay Bales Festival is a unique rural event that puts local aspiring musicians, an orchestra and a headline act on a stage in an arena built of Hay Bales.
What is the Moora Hay Bales Festival?
It’s a big outdoor music concert held inside an arena made from hay bales. Picture a country-style mini amphitheatre built from stacked bales, with a full stage in the centre.

Piano Room brings together live piano music, recorded sounds, and storytelling, making it feel like a mix of a play, a sound artwork, and a concert. You can sit on a chair or relax on a cushion on the floor, and because the room is dark, the sound really takes centre stage. They become the first blackfullas to run a pub in the district.
The Glass Slipper Tavern is the only pub for miles amongst the Yellow Springs district of canola and cattle farms. The tavern desperately needs repairs but it’s not easy operatng on
a shoestring budget. Can a karaoke night fundraiser, with the help of Roxy, a savvy barmaid with secret talents, help them save the pub?

Meet crime writer Jonathon Mapletree and a cast of suspicious characters as you solve this quintessentially British mystery.
It is 1929, and this English Cotswold beauty spot is celebrating the life of elderly heiress Rose Stimper, who, in an act of philanthropy, has bequeathed the village a large sum of money and left instructions that the villagers must decide how best to spend it.
This will be a party like no other. Everyone has ideas on how to spend the money, and the entire village turns out to attend Pokeingham Hall, which has been thrown open for the first time in many years to host the event.
But beware, all is not as it seems. There are dark forces at work…
Enjoy a delicious three-course dinner as you question the suspects, decipher the clues and work to crack the case. And remember: where there’s a will, there’s a murder!

John Button's Story

John Button is a man from Perth who was the victim of a significant miscarriage of justice. Button was wrongfully convicted of the manslaughter, by vehicle impact, of his girlfriend, Rosemary Anderson, in 1963. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, and released in 1968.However, the case against Button was fraught with errors from the start. Button's conviction was sustained for many years, despite growing doubts and calls for a re-examination of the case. In the years that followed, a series of legal battles and appeals would gradually reveal the truth. In 2002, after a long legal struggle, John Button was exonerated. His case became a symbol of the flaws in the Australian legal system, highlighting the dangers of wrongful convictions and the importance of safeguarding justice. Button now spearheads the Western Australian Innocence Project which aims to free the wrongfully convicted.

STORIES ABOUT MUMS.
Mama Stitch is a storytelling experience, celebrating Mums in all their imperfections, challenges and triumphs.
A cross section of people from the community are interviewed, ranging in age, experience and background.
These interviews are edited and presented as “Headphone Verbatim” (meaning the actor wears headphones and delivers the text as they hear them, live, without embellishment).
Each story is live scored by our band Kettlefish, with an original and unique musical response.
The work is intimate; performed in the cosiness of Gardiner Street Arts Collective. We invite the audience into the space with toast and tea (we bake fresh bread for each show in the space) so the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
At the end of each show we invite the audience to write an anonymous letter to their own mum that we display in the space. That way, the space and set are continually built as more people engage with it.

Everyone in ‘the hood’ thinks Red is pretty amazing!
Of course, every story has a troublemaker and this one has Walter – The Big Bad Wolf. He’s not really that big or bad ...more like medium-sized and cheeky, but he does leave rubbish all over the place and has no idea about recycling.
Walter can smell the awesome chocolate cake Granny’s got cooking and he’s on a mission to get the first bite of the cake… and Granny…oh no!!

Sabrina Hahn is a whole lot of Hort with Heart – master gardener, horticulturalist with a passion for the creation of sustainable environments that make cities more livable. Her aim is to make gardening an entertaining pastime and educate listeners in the importance of creating biodiversity in their own backyards. She believes gardeners have a role to play in becoming caretakers of sustainable landscapes that allows other species to thrive.
Sabrina believes that everyone can grow their own food regardless of the size of space. In 2020 Sabrina developed Hort with Heart a premium liquid fertiliser range that address the nutrient deficiencies found in our soils to ensure gardeners have greater success sustainably growing their own fruit and vegies.
