In a time that often feels fast, noisy, and unsettled, A Thing of Beauty is a return to something quieter.
This new ABC Classic album release and tour from Emily Granger, Principal Harpist of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, brings together music that lingers — works by Australian women composers, alongside new commissions and a series of deeply personal transcriptions. These are pieces that don’t demand attention so much as invite it, unfolding at their own pace.
Threaded through the program are moments of poetry and reflection, offering a glimpse into the ideas and images that shaped the music. The result is an experience that moves between stillness and motion, simplicity and depth — a space to listen, and perhaps to breathe.

A Lark and a Wolf

A lark, a duck and a bird grace this afternoon’s program. Two timeless pieces, The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. Matthew Schwarz and the Limpinwood Ensemble accompany the beautiful 2006 Suzie Templeton film of the same name which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. The wonderful Courtenay Cleary soars above the clouds in the beautiful Lark Ascending.

Treat yourself to the fantastical, whimsical and sometimes mischievous “Mythical Creatures,” a song cycle by Paul Kopetz on the poetry of Svyetlana Hadgraft and a variety of inspired portraits. Each of the 10 movements is a musical impression of a mythical creature that has existed in the folklore of cultures from around the world since the beginning of time. With illustrations by Tyalgum Public School students these creatures will really come to life.

Australian based, Russian pianist Konstantin Shamray makes his Tyalgum debut with a stunning program of Rameau, Chopin Nocturne op.27 no1, Chopin Fantasy op.49, Ravel La Valse and Schumann Sonata no.3. Since making history by winning not only First Prize and the People’s Choice Prize in addition to 6 other prizes at the 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition, Konstantin has performed extensively throughout Australia and Internationally.
