Your leader on this journey through time and space is Robyn Mellor, Canberra’s premier recorder performer. See the shape of the instrument change before your eyes, from the 16th century Ganassi in G, custom-built for the brilliant Dutch divisions of Jacob van Eyck, to the contemporary Paetzold square bass recorder encased in layers of marine ply, ideally suited for Pete Rose’s tribute to Be-Bop I’d Rather Be in Philadelphia. Hear the virtuosic echoes of High Renaissance style of Frescobaldi and Bassano warping through the baroque age of Bach and others to reach their final ecstatic resonant form in Australian Ross Edwards’ Ulpirra. Introducing to Canberra audiences an exciting new musi-cal group, the Canberra Contrabass Quartet (C2Q) in their world premiere concert. The double bass quartet is a time-honoured ensemble for bass players. While it may seem strange to some, the range, depth, power, and versatility of the double bass allows a double bass quartet to create a sound world unlike any other. John Ma is a Violinist/Violist and Viola d’amore player specialising in Early Music. He has performed with groups such as Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Academia Montis Regalis, Bach Collegium Japan , Musica Poetica, Fantasticus, New Collegium, Collegium 1704, Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, and B'Rock. In Australia, John appears with Pinchgut Opera, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian Haydn Ensemble, Australian Bach Akademie, Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, and Salut!Baroque.Marie Searles is a pianist/fortepianist with a strong love of chamber music and accompaniment. She has cultivated an engaging and sensitive approach to collaborative playing which has won her recognition with her musical partners.

Wednesday 26 April WeLC 12.40-1.20pm. Resonance – The Unaccompanied Double Bass - Kyle Ramsey-Daniel, performing on the double bass in his first concert in this series. The best unaccompanied works tend to take advantage of the strengths of the instrument for which they were written. In the case of the double bass, its true strength lies in its depth of tone, large range and booming resonance. Wednesday 1 March WeLC 12.40-1.20pm LE NUOVE MUSICHE / The New Musics. AJ America, mezzo-soprano, & Ariana Odermatt, harpsichord, in a concert of music by Monteverdi and Caccini. Drawing largely on songs and monodies from Caccini’s 1602 collection (“Le nuove musiche”), these works are some of the earliest examples of the Italian “seconda practica” – a development from polyphonic music. This exciting and innovative concert was much anticipated in June 2022 but was cancelled when one of the performers was struck by COVID. We are truly delighted that an audience can experience it now! “Wednesday Lunchtime Concerts” 9 November “Unique Baroque”

12.40-1.20pm. “Unique Baroque” The virtuosic Anton Wurzer on piano akkordeon & the wonderful harpsichord performer Ariana Odermatt in another of their truly exciting and unique programs. Little is known about Wilhelm Bernau, an obscure German composer, but it seems he wrote specifically for akkordeon. Anton has discovered a delightful little Sonatine in a book printed by the German music company Hohner Pty Ltd. The duo have previously performed JS Bach’s Gamba Sonata 1027 in G Major, which Ariana arranged for akkordeon and harpsichord. This time they will play Bach’s Gamba Sonata in D Major. The program will conclude with the duo’s arrangement of Handel’s Sonata for Violin and Continuo in A Major, HWV 361.
