Our mission is to nurture your child's natural curiosity and love for Hobart’s bushland Reserves and to foster a deep appreciation for the natural world around them.

Not all of our native creatures can lay claim to having lived alongside dinosaurs, or managed to survive in a waterway that flows directly into and under a capital city! One such creature can, it’s our special web-footed, duck-billed, egg-laying platypus and it lives right here in the city! Join us with a sense of adventure as we learn all about these amazing monotremes and go on a search for these elusive creatures.

Bike and hike into the back of kunanyi/Mt Wellington on a journey to one of Tasmania’s most spectacular waterfalls. We’ll cycle along the Pipeline Track then walk in for lunch at-top Wellington Falls before heading home. Bring: Your own working bicycle, helmet and lock, weather appropriate clothing including a wind/rain jacket, sturdy closed shoes, a small backpack, water bottle and lunch. - Session time - 10 am -4 pm - Parent/carer free activity - full supervision provided

Come sit amongst the gum trees, and share in some stories of wild creatures, amazing plants and other tales of our natural world, read by Bushcare Walking Book Club volunteers and local children’s authors. We’ll be showcasing all of the books longlisted for the 2019 Environmental Award for Children’s Literature, including some from local Tasmanian authors. You’ll also have the opportunity to create your very own book! This is an event for all ages – feel free to BYO snack or picnic.

Join Brendan Lennard, the City of Hobart’s Senior Cultural Heritage Officer, to explore the cultural history of the Queens Domain. From an Aboriginal cultural landscape of the mouheneener people to ‘the government paddock’ and then ‘the people’s park’, the Queens Domain has been used and loved by many over the years. During this easy walk you will discover why the railway roundabout has no railway and why the University Rose Gardens is not at the university.

Nestled in the foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington is a small stone cabin with a whole lot of history. Join us for a special expedition to this historic hut where we’ll learn fire making and bush cooking skills around the campfire. Who’s that flittering by? What made that sound, how can a bird weighing less than 10g and no opposable thumbs create a treehouse high in the canopy? Come and play ‘spotto’ with our winged wonders and see how many birds you can find in our bush. We’ll also find out some of the tricks of the nest-building trade and make our own nests! Wellington Falls Expedition (10-14yrs)

Wellington Falls is a must see for all Tasmanians. Tucked away behind kunanyi/Mt Wellington sits the majestic waterfall surrounded by dolerite cliffs. To get there we’ll ride our bikes along the pipeline track then hike in, have a lunch at-top the falls before making the return journey home. Bring: Bicycle (please ensure bikes are in good working condition) and helmet, weather appropriate clothing, including a wind/rain jacket, sturdy shoes, backpack, water bottle and lunch.

This activity is designed specifically to introduce little ones to the joys of the outdoors with a focus on fun, exploring and a cultivating a sense of wonder for all things wild. Each week we visit one of Hobarts incredible Bushland Reserves, meander our way down pathways and pads to find our very own “Story time” spot amongst the forest. Not just for the kids, these sessions also help parents and carers feel more comfortable in the bush and build your own eco-literacy.

Learn how you can help our furry and feathered friends find a home among the gum trees. Discover the importance of habitat and help build and paint a very special ‘nest box’ that’ll provide valuable habitat for years to come. All materials will be provided and the nest boxes created will be installed throughout Hobart’s Bushlands and further afield. Please BYO paint smock/old clothes for children if they wish to paint.

From the summit we’ll head out into the wilds of South Wellington, head down the historic Ice-house Track to the Springs, from here the group will choose their route to continue to Fern Tree. Bring: Weather appropriate clothing, including a wind/rain jacket, sturdy closed shoes, small backpack, water bottle and a snack for the trail. Note: Pick-up is at Fern Tree Park, corner of Huon Rd and Summerleas Rd, Fern Tree (near Fern Tree Tavern).
