AHS Centaur 80th Anniversary
Floor Talk and Morning Tea
On 14th May 1943, the Hospital Ship ‘Centaur’ with 332 persons on board was torpedoed off the Queensland coast by the Japanese Imperial Navy submarine K-177.
Among 64, the survivors were Dr Leslie Outridge and Sister Ellen Savage.
Sister Savage was the only one of twelve nursing sisters on board to survive who, whilst injured herself, gave great assistance to the other survivors and was awarded the George Medal for her service.
Dr Outridge, after being rescued, recuperated at ‘Verita’, the home of his brother Selwyn, in Redland Bay.
