Jessie Street Luncheon 2023
- On 2 June, we are proud to host a panel discussion on the Voice to Parliament and its significance ahead of the upcoming national referendum. The event features three experts in the field of Indigenous rights and cultural understanding, Professor Tom Calma AO, filmmaker Rachel Perkins and lawyer Teela Reid.

Tom Calma AO
Professor Tom Calma is a Kungarakan tribal Elder and a member of the Iwaidja tribal group whose traditional lands are southwest of Darwin and on the Cobourg Peninsula, respectively. Currently the Chancellor of the University of Canberra, a Professor at the University of Sydney and the National Coordinator for Tackling Indigenous Smoking. Race Discrimination Commissioner (2004-2009) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner (2004-2010), Tom was awarded an OAM in 2012 in recognition of his advocacy, work in human rights and social justice and distinguished service to the Indigenous community.
Rachel Perkins
Rachel is an Arrernte and Kalkadoon woman, a multi-award-winning filmmaker, a signatory to the Uluru Statement from the Heart and with Danny Gilbert, Co-Chair of Australians for Indigenous Constitutional Recognition. AIRC is the organisation coordinating the Yes Alliance to secure a majority Yes vote at this year’s referendum.
Teela Reid
Teela Reid is a proud Wiradjuri and Wailwan woman, lawyer, essayist, storyteller and co-founder of @blackfulla_bookclub, a platform that honours First Nation’s Ancestors as the original Storytellers. Currently, Teela is a Sydney-based Senior Solicitor practicing in Aboriginal Land Rights litigation and is the current Practitioner in residence at Sydney Law School. She is also a campaigner for the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
