ZZAffinity Quartet return to the Library
About
We are thrilled to welcome Josephine, Nicholas, Ruby, and Me Na of the internationally acclaimed Affinity Quartet, as they return after a period in Europe bringing a program of treasures for string quartet to the Athenaeum Library. Spanning over three centuries of music, works by Mozart, Kurtag and Janáček showcase the expressive diversity of the string quartet. Mozart’s ‘Hunt’ Quartet, dedicated to Haydn, captures the imagination and experimentation of the Golden Age of string quartet writing in the late eighteenth century. The 97 year old Hungarian composer and pianist, Gyorgy Kurtag’s ‘Six Moments Musicaux’ strive to distill sound, gesture and emotion to their most succinct essence. Closing the program, twentieth century Czech composer Leos Janacek’s ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ explores an obsessive love affair in programmatic and visceral detail. Be sure to hear them they compete as the only Australian ensemble in the 2023 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.Location
