The impacts of separation and divorce on the parent-child relationship has flow on effects for children's mental health. As the first session in the series, this foundational webinar will explore child mental health in the context of parental separation and discuss ways to collaborate with families to strengthen the parent-child relationship, support children’s mental health and improve wellbeing outcomes for children and their family.

Session 2: Understanding child mental health in the context of parental separation where there is FDV
Children don’t need to directly witness or experience family and domestic violence (FDV) to be affected by it. Following session one, this webinar will explore ways for practitioners to identify the impacts of FDV on children and offer ways to promote children’s mental health and wellbeing in the context FDV and parental separation.

Session 3: Engaging children in the context of parental separation
In the context of parental separation, what does it mean to ‘hear a child’, or to actively involve them in the decisions that shape their lives? The third webinar in the Emerging Minds series will explore practice shifts that view children as active participants in their own lives and will introduce key positions and perspectives that effectively engage children and support them to share their views and experiences surrounding their family's separation.

Session 4: Cultural considerations in the context of parental separation – Panel discussion with Nancy Jeffrey and Julie Ngwabi from Emerging Minds
Understanding infant, children and family's connections to culture, spirituality and kin is vital in establishing relationships that uphold children’s rights, mental health and wellbeing during parental separation. Nancy Jeffrey and Julie Ngwabi will join the final webinar in this series for a facilitated panel discussion exploring key cultural considerations that support the mental health and wellbeing of children from diverse cultures during parental separation. Nancy and Julie will share their perspectives and practice insights, including the importance of extended kin in maintaining children’s connections with their family, community, culture, country and language.
Nancy is a proud Woolwonga woman living and working on Larrakia Country in the Northern Territory. Julie is a psychiatric mental health nurse of African descent who immigrated to Australia with her family in 2004.
