Hosted by South Gippsland Rural Australians for Refugees (SGRAR) this fundraiser seeks to support Afghan families in danger.

FOR SAMA is both an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.

Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.

This multi award winning film is the first feature documentary by Emmy award-winning filmmakers, Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts. Making history when it was nominated in four categories in the BAFTA awards, making it the most nominated documentary ever. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards. Winner of the London Critics Circle Film Awards Documentary of the Year Award, winner of the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards Best Single Documentary, winner of the Peabody Awards, winner of the Cannes Film Festival Golden Eye award and many more.

SGRAR is a community group affiliated with National RAR. We were formed in February 2003 in Bass Coast in order to;

uphold decency and humanity in Australia’s refugee and asylum seeker policies
welcome and support refugees and asylum seekers who come to live in our area
help in resettling refugees into our area
raise funds through community activities and donations to use for refugee and asylum seeker needs.

No one leaves their home willingly or gladly. When people leave en masse the place of their birth, it means there is something very deeply wrong with the circumstances in that country and we should never take lightly these flights of refugees fleeing across borders. They are a sign, they are a symptom, they are proof that something is very wrong somewhere on the international scene. When the moment comes to leave your home, it is a painful moment.
