Illustrated talk. The wreck of Star of Greece on 13 July 1888 was an important event in the history of Port Willunga and, more generally, in the colony of South Australia. It is now 135 years since the vessel sank off Chinaman’s Gully at Port Willunga just 200m from the shore.This new talk recasts the history of the wreck through the lens of some of the artworks depicting the wreck including the seven known works by George Frederick Gregory junior; four held in public collections (two in the Art Gallery of South Australia, one in the State Library of South Australia and one by the South Australian Maritime Museum) and three held in private collections. It also reconsiders the collections of material from Star of Greece held by the Willunga Branch of the National Trust of South Australia (WNT) in the Courthouse Museum at Willunga and by the South Australian Maritime Museum (SAMM) in Port Adelaide as well as some of the material that is still held by local residents of the district.
