Warm yourself this winter with stunning works from the Golden Age of English choral music.Join vocal ensemble VOX as they explore some treasures of this remarkable musical revival, including works by Edward Elgar, CV Stanford, Arthur Sullivan, Frank Bridge, John Ireland and Vaughan Williams, and culminating in Benjamin Britten’s extraordinary Hymn to St Cecilia.
The late 19th century saw English music re-emerge from a long period of stagnation to buck dominant European trends. An innovative generation of composers led by Edward Elgar and CV Stanford forged new paths in music, drawing from several sources including the folk song tradition. Their compositions reflected the changes occurring in British society and heralded a unique epoch of lush music.
