Melbourne Chamber Choir presents music of Percy Grainger
About
PLEASURABLE DISTURBANCESWith the great arranger, Percy Grainger
Percy Grainger is undoubtedly a towering figure in Australian music. MCC is proud to present a selection of his choral treasures.
Three are settings of Rudyard Kipling. One is from the Bible. Two tragic songs of the sea. Two about a wedding – one happy, one sad. Two are beloved folk songs and one, “Australian Up-Country Song” has woven itself into Australian folksong legend.
Audiences will be pleased, and also be disturbed, when Grainger’s carefree melodies assume darker and darker harmonic hues. But what is pleasure worth if there are no eddies?
Grainger an arranger? Well, not quite. He is of course so well known for his arrangements of folk songs, being among the pioneers of that craft. Audiences will also experience his own creative force, some in folk-song idiom, some white free-spirited, and one which could only be described as downright crazy (The Bride’s Tragedy, based on a wild poem by the crazy A.C. Swinburne).
