KELVIN CONFIDENTIAL
About
We are delighted to announce a new series of informal discussions with remarkable creatives drawn from our membership. The guest will reveal a guilty pleasure that has some way influenced their thinking. The prompt for the conversation will provoke a styly entertaining way of yeilding an unknown facet of the guest! Perhaps a song, poem or even an appetite for junk food, the conversation will be convival and informal - and what better place than perached on the stools at the Kelvin Club bar.
The event is free, and will take place on the first Wednesday of the month.
Kelvin Confidential is hosted by James Hewison and his next guest is Professor Su Baker AM, painter, academic, mentor and the first female president of the Kelvin Club!
Su is currently the Pro Vice-Chancellor Cultural Partnerships, and also the Director of Centre of Visual Arts (CoVA), at the University of Melbourne. She was Head of the School of Art for 10 years and the Director of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) for seven years. She was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2018 for significant service to tertiary education in the visual and creative arts.
Su has held solo exhibitions since 1983 in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. Her painting has also been included in significant group exhibitions including Perspecta '89 at the AGNSW, Dissonance: Aspects of Feminism at Artspace, Sydney (1993) and Heavenly Creatures at Heide Museum of Modern Art (2004-5). Su was awarded the Portia Geach Portrait Prize in 1996. Her work is held in the collections of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Artbank and regional and tertiary collections. Sustained Sensation a monograph of her work was published in 2016.
Growing up in a loving but very Protestant family, albeit two generations apart, appropriately, I feel guilty about any pleasures!
However, I have made valiant efforts to overcome these limitations!
What will Su have the courage to reveal?
