Celebrating the music of the early
Jazz Guitarists
Thursday 26th October 2023 1.00pm
Majestic Theatre, 3 Factory St, Pomona
Members $25 – Guests $30 + booking fee

While it is tempting to say that the jazz guitar began with Eddie Lang in 1925, the guitar was used in jazz groups from the very beginning. Most early New Orleans bands had a guitarist, (Buddy Bolden’s band 1895) and in fact, one of the first bands to be considered a bit jazz-oriented was led by guitarist Charlie Galloway in 1889.
The early bands in which guitarists featured were for dances and parties in which quieter and more polite music was desired, rather than brass bands.
So for this concert we have matched the beautiful tones of Paul Williams clarinet and sax, with the warmness of Peter Walters Bass and the delicate brush work of Rod Andrew’s drums with Russell Bayne and David Burrows skillful guitar renditions of compositions made famous by the legendary guitarists.
