ADHD FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA PRESENTS
'ADHD and Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder'

ADHD and Women

PRESENTER:  DR ALISON POULTON  PAEDIATRICIAN

Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics
Sydney Medical School Nepean
The University of Sydney

Topic: ADHD and Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Around 40% of children with ADHD also meet diagnostic criteria for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), which is far higher than would be anticipated by a chance association. ODD is very frequently associated with ADHD. People with ODD typically overreact with anger in response to minor frustration. The lack of control over impulsive behaviour in ADHD becomes even worse when associated with anger. These children may incorrectly interpret another child’s actions as hostile. Dr. Alison Poulton is a highly qualified professional paediatrician with a rich educational background and extensive experience in her field. She studied medicine at Girton College, Cambridge and Guy’s Hospital London before migrating to Australia. Dr Poulton completed her advanced training in Melbourne and Sydney. She is a senior lecturer in Paediatrics at the Sydney Medical School Nepean Sydney University. Dr Poulton specialises in treating children with ADHD
WHAT WILL BE COVERED IN THE PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION
Parents will understand that for many children with ADHD, having ODD is ‘part of the package’. Parents will understand that ODD is often more disabling than ADHD. Parents will understand that in ODD the mood is often set lower than normal, so that the child feels negative and un co-operative and takes their feelings out on other people. Parents will understand that ODD is a disability, not a lifestyle choice. Parents will recognise the importance of their child enjoying positive achievements and maintaining their self-esteem.
