Greenaway Studio welcomes back Dutch harpsichordist Peter Hagen for an afternoon of 17th and 18th Century baroque harpsichord music.

This retrospective look at the pieces that have inspired Peter with love and delight includes the wildly chromatic 7th toccata by Michelangelo Rossi as well as music by Sweelinck, J.S. Bach Georg Böhm and Louis Couperin.

In the 1615 foreword of Frescobaldi's Toccatas the famous composer writes that playing his toccatas should be very much 'at the pleasure of the performer', which is what Peter will be doing throughout this concert. “I could perform another 5 or 6 concerts of favourite pieces without thinking too hard about what to include. The difficulty with this programme has been all the things I have had to exclude!” He goes on to say, “It’s so nice to have no other reason to play than to simply play some of my favourite things instead of sticking to a theme or a genre”.

Peter's concert with Niels Bijl at Greenaway Studio earlier this year was very well received:

'...what was exceptionally pleasing about this concert was being able to hear every note on Hagen’s Dutch harpsichord, which produced a quality and expressive sound.'
- Rob Kennedy, City News, 12 Mar 2023

He will perform on an exquisite copy of a Ruckers harpsichord originally owned by Marie Antoinette now in a museum in Kolmar France. Expertly made by master craftsman Jean-Michel Chablot of Switzerland, Peter counts himself as extremely fortunate to have such a superior and beautiful instrument with such a rich clear sound. To complete the decorations with their gold leaf detailing, the exquisite lid painting is painted by an Italian artist who was originally a conservator in an Italian museum. It loosely copies a mid-18th century painting by Watteau.

Peter Hagen has performed as a harpsichordist in Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia, where he regularly presents recitals and works as a continuo player with numerous ensembles. He is also an experienced accompanist having worked with singers in many different fields ranging from folk to opera.

Peter studied harpsichord in the Netherlands with Bob van Asperen and Jacques Ogg, and has worked on numerous projects and master classes with Ton Koopman, Lars Ulrick-Mortensen and others. He also undertook organ studies with Rienke Jiskoot.

He has an extensive teaching studio where he teaches piano, harpsichord and undertakes group tuition on keyboard.

Peter runs the highly successful Broadford Salon, a house concert venue similar to Greenaway Studio, where he has run his own chamber music series in regional Victoria for 12 years. In Amsterdam, he worked as the concert organiser of the Engelse Kerk, a 14th century historic church hosts as many as 12-13 concerts per month.

While in Amsterdam, Peter also worked closely with an Amsterdam musical instrument workshop  to produce some of the world’s finest harpsichords.
