Beethoven - Overture: Leonore no. 3
Bruch - Violin Concerto no 1
Schumann - Symphony no. 3, Rhenish
We open the 2024 Zelman Symphony’s Year of the Violin with Sophie Rowell playing one of classical music’s most popular and beautiful violin concertos. This follows the huge success of our last 2023 concert when we performed the delightful Bruch double concerto for viola and clarinet.
Recently appointed as the Artistic Director of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Sophie Rowell has had an extensive performing career as a soloist, chamber musician and principal orchestral violinist in Australia and abroad, most recently as the co-concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. After winning the ABC Young Performers Award in 2000, Sophie founded the Tankstream Quartet which was later appointed as the Australian String Quartet for six seasons. Sophie has played in principal violin positions with orchestras including the Scottish and Mahler Chamber Orchestras, and the Vancouver, Sydney, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. She is Head of Chamber Music (Strings) at the Australian National Academy of Music.Beethoven’s Leonora Overture no. 3 to Fidelio, Beethoven’s only opera, is a fittingly dramatic start to Zelman Symphony’s 2024 season. This is the heroic and dramatic Beethoven at his best.
Schumann’s final and best loved symphony, the Rhenish, presents a gloriously romantic picture of the magnificent Rhine. At the premiere the audience applauded enthusiastically between each movement and at the end. We hope our audience will feel the same way.
