Working Bee - Cowes

About
Come along and meet the dedicated team caring for the coast of Cowes for a Beach Clean Up and seaspurge weeding.Cowes Coastcare Group was established in Feb 2022 with an initial project to eradicate Sea spurge on Cowes foreshore. Achieving this goal of eradication will take ongoing follow up over a number of years. Sea Spurge is a weed that inhabits sand dunes across Phillip Island. It grows in thick patches along the dunes closest to the water and spreads very quickly. It also stops natural movement of sand along beaches, changes the natural shape and structure of dunes, ruins nesting areas for threatened shorebirds, reduces the number of native plants, limits walkers and beach users access, and releases a poisonous sap that can irritate skin and eyes.
The group also plans to branch out into eradication of other weed species with involvement and education of community and replanting as needed.
