UWA Day of Percussion 2024
UWA’s Chair of Percussion Dr Paul Tanner, will introduce our junior participants to the African marimbas, delve into Latin percussion with our intermediate students, and provide an opportunity for seniors to discuss and perform ATAR repertoire in an informative masterclass; Thea Rossen (director of the Ad Lib Collective) will guide students to create amazing new music using water, paper, glass ceramic and more with all three groups.; Adam Tan (Creator of The Studio and director of Marimbafest) will dig deep into the wonderful world of the concert marimba; Brian Maloney, Principal Percussionist of the WA Symphony Orchestra, will present an intensive orchestral workshop to the seniors; and Australian jazz-drumming legend, Ben Vanderwal, will discuss his approach to advanced drum kit skills!
During the breaks, there will be percussion gear available from The Studio by Adam Tan, with huge discounts on mallets, gear and sheet music from Encore Mallets, Salyers Percussion and Edition Svitzer; along with beautiful handmade triangles by local percussionist, Steven Hartley.
To round off the day, each group will rehearse a piece, before coming together to rehearse ‘AfroJunk’, featuring our African marimbas, the ‘bass thongaphone’, djembés, a bottle xylophone, and ‘junk’ panpipes!
There will be 3 streams on the day, if you are unsure which level is best for you, please get in touch!
