'Effective Generalist Treatments for BPD'
Join us for an evening of Bollywood Glamour for a Cause with Harvard Professor Dr. Lois Choi-Kain
Monday 18th March 6.30-9.30pm
🗣️ Learn from a Harvard Professor, Lois Choi-Kain, a global expert on borderline personality disorder (BPD). She is a world renowned psychiatrist and director of the Gunderson Personality Disorders Institute in Boston, USA. People living with BPD often experience stigma and discrimination which remains a significant barrier to accessing appropriate care.
There are several evidence-based treatments for BPD, such as Dialectical behaviour Therapy (DBT), Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), Schema-Focused Therapy (SFT) and Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP). However, these may require many years of mastery and often have limited availability. Recently, structured generalist approaches have been developed drawn from the core principles of ‘what works’ from these specialist therapies. They have been proven to work for people experiencing BPD.There will be ample opportunity to ask Lois your questions.
🎭 We invite you to dress vibrantly and add a splash of colour to the evening, inspired by the rich hues of Bollywood and the vibrant spirit of India. Feel free to weave bold colours into your attire, celebrating the essence of the theme while respecting cultural sensitivity. Lets make it a night of colourful celebration!
🍽️ Indulge in a sumptuous 3-course Indian feast and stand a chance to win fabulous door prizes and participate in our exciting auction.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
The event is for anyone who wishes to support the work of the Australian BPD Foundation and for clinicians from a range of mental health and allied health sectors who want to broaden their understanding of BPD.
Dr Lois W. Choi-Kain is the Director of the Gunderson Personality Disorders Institute (GPDI). The institute provides training and supervision for numerous proven treatments, including mentalization-based treatment (MBT), dialectical behavioral therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (DBT-PTSD), transference focused psychotherapy (TFP), and general psychiatric management (GPM). She works nationally and internationally to expand teaching efforts on borderline personality disorder and its evidence-based treatments and engages in research to study resources for training clinicians who need direction and patients who need access to informed care. With her mentor, John Gunderson, Dr. Choi-Kain developed a training program for GPM and has been expanding its applications.
Her aim as a researcher is to expand the scope and reach of effective interventions for BPD as a regular fixture of routine mental health care, to allow earlier intervention and facilitation of recovery before the burdens of illness too greatly diminish developmental opportunities critical to fostering healthy personality functioning.
