Assessing mental state at time of offence for legal reports

Date
Location
Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science Level 1, 582 Heidelberg Road, Alphington, VIC, 3078

About

The law recognises that a person's mental state when they commit an offence may render them not responsible for the offence or may be a mitigating factor at sentencing. Experts are asked to provide opinions in such cases in the form of reports and oral evidence. This day will give participants a detailed overview of the relevant legal provisions in Australia, particularly: the defence of mental impairment, automatism, diminished responsibility and sentencing considerations.
This workshop is designed for professionals/practitioners working with mental health or justice involved people. If you have questions about your suitability for this workshop, please contact FMHPDP@forensicare.vic.gov.au

Facilitator: Dr Rajan Darjee, Adjunct Associate Professor and Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist

NOTE: This workshop will be delivered in a hybrid format - both in-person and online attendance is available.
