Youth Mental Health First Aid
This blended online course equips adults who teach, care for and support young people, with the skills and confidence needed to recognise and respond to a young person experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
The aims of this course are to provide an overview of mental illnesses, risk factors, prevalence, and impact; and gain an in-depth understanding of how to assist adolescents who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis, until appropriate professional help is received, using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan.
Content includes depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, substance use problems, suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychosis states, severe effects from alcohol or other drug use, and aggressive behaviours.
On completion of the course, you will:
- have increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in adolescents
- be able to recognise and respond to an emerging and worsening mental health problem and understand the interventions and supports available, including how to approach a young person that you are concerned about
- be able to apply mental health first aid in a range of crisis situations
- be eligible to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider, upon completion of an online assessment, following the course
The blended online format includes:
