About the Presenters
The Honourable Robert Benjamin AM SC is a lawyer and former judge of the Family Court of Australia. Admitted to legal practice in 1975, Robert practised extensively in family law and child protection prior to his appointment to the bench in 2005. He retired as a Family Court Judge in 2021 and was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2022. Robert has had a strong history in mediation, arbitration, negotiation and forms of dispute resolution. He is an AIFLAM Arbitrator. He is also extensively involved in legal professional development. He has assisted with the development of non-adversarial dispute resolution in other countries including Indonesia, Japan and Zimbabwe. Robert was Commissioner in the Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's Response to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings. He was the President of the New South Wales Law Society in 2003. Robert was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015 for his significant service to the judiciary and to the law, legal education, mediation and arbitration and professional standards. Robert is currently at Micheal Kirby Chambers.
Michelle Benjamin is an Assistant Principal and Trauma Informed Practice facilitator with the Child Wellbeing and Mental Health Unit for the NSW Department of Education. Michelle is a Trauma Informed Community of Practice Co-Ordinator (Sutherland Shire area) and was part of the Trauma Informed Practice Disability Advisory Committee. Michelle is also a qualified Dramatherapist and Counsellor having worked with children, nursing-home patients, First Nations people and service-users attending outpatient hospital mental health day programs, providing both individual and group therapy interventions. Michelle has co-created and co-facilitated trauma-informed professional learning to the Judicial Commission of New South Wales and regional law society conferences.
