Rethinking bushfire mitigation in the landscape

Modern fire science has been influenced for many decades by colonising attitudes of control and domination of the natural landscape. Practices such as broadscale burning of bushland have routinely been used in an attempt to reduce bushfire risk.Recent research is pointing to a different approach to forest management of areas further than 500m from townships – that of ecological cooperation.
Ecologist and fire behaviour scientist, Dr Philip Zylstra, will speak about the scientific evidence for Ecological Control Theory and the ways in which forests and bushland naturally limit the impacts of fire.
Vicky Shukuroglou from Nillumbio will address the critical role that a richly biodiverse environment can play in building forest resilience to climate impacts.
Aawa White from Kinglake Friends of the Forest will discuss the work of KFF in mapping and measuring the forest using the Fire Research and Modelling Environment work developed by Dr Zylstra.
