Science Gallery - Get Your Motor Running & It's not natural (SOLD OUT)
About
A double program comprising a facilitated tour of the current exhibit "It's Not Natural" and STEAM Program "Get Your Motor Running." Ages 12+
Get Your Motor RunningHarness magnets, electricity and a selection of unusual materials to build and race a car against your friends.
Do you have a need… a need for speed? Join Science Gallery as we explore the mechanics of how to make things go fast. Specifically, how does an electric motor work, and how can we use one to create our own speedster?
Built around Formula E, students act as engineers, gaining and using knowledge of electric motors to design a battery-operated vehicle from a selection of odd materials. They will have to combine their knowledge with innovative solutions to make these materials work on our drag strip.
It's Not Natural
In this facilitator-led experience, students will be guided through the NOT NATURAL exhibition at Science Gallery Melbourne.
The exhibition will explore the friction between cultural perceptions of nature and the implications of creating synthetic forms of life. Advances in synthetic biology have opened a plethora of possibility and a pandoras box of ethical dilemmas. We’ve stepped into a new era, where the tools of genetic engineering and biotechnology allow us to gene-edit, splice and de-extinct almost anything biological. We get to design new life-forms and modify existing ones. But are we redesigning evolution or is evolution re-designing us? And just because we can, should we?
