The Mirror

The Mirror is an attempt to understand the experience of refugees and displaced persons fleeing the Nazis and the Holocaust, by examining the creations of composers and artists affected by these events. We will tell the experience of European Jews and other enemies of the Nazis from 1933 on, how they attempted to flee to safety, some succeeding, some failing, but none being unaffected.

This lecture-concert is presented as part of our Music of Memory series, in collaboration with Flowers of Peace and the Australian War Memorial.

About the Workshop
We tell the story of the Dunera Boys, of musical resistance, of the escape into the creative imagination, or migration to Australian and the US. Featuring the works of Erwin Schulhoff, Boaz Bischofswerder, Pavel Haas, Viktor Ullmann, George Dreyfus, Ignaz Friedman, Henriëtte Bosmans, Bohuslav Martinů, Erich Korngold and Georg Tintner and artworks by Felix Nussbaum, Otto Freundlich, Josef Kowner, Charlotte Salomon, Freidl Dicker-Brandeis, Charlotte Burešová and Malva Schalek.

Performed by Dr Edward Neeman, piano, and Chris Latham OAM, violin, as part of his Flowers of Peace project for the Australian War Memorial, which measures the cultural cost of war.

Dr Edward Neeman
The Australian-American pianist Edward Neeman, praised as a “true artist” across five continents, boasts top prizes in international piano competitions. He's collaborated with acclaimed musicians worldwide and performs duets with his wife, Dr. Stephanie Neeman. Holding degrees from prestigious institutions, Dr. Neeman teaches piano at the Australian National University and serves as Artist Faculty at the ELMS Conservatory in Jakarta.

Christopher Latham OAM
Christopher Latham OAM is the Australian War Memorial’s first musical artist-in-residence. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate by the University of Canberra, the order of Arts and Letters by France and the Medal of the Order of Australia for his work on music and war. All his work is made to lighten the burden of trauma, and to help those affected, to heal.
