Acacia Quartet Friday 9 August 2024 Acacia Quartet returns to Port Phillip Estate with a program of famous Russian string quartets and a wonderful new piece by Australian composer Lyle Chan’. Peter Tchaikovsky – String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 11. Lyle Chan – Entering The Palaces. Alexander Borodin – String Quartet No. 2 in D major. The program will start with Peter Tchaikovsky’s famous 1st string quartet, written in 1871. At that time Tchaikovsky was still trying to establish himself as a composer and the quartet’s success helped raise his stature in Moscow. The famous Andante, inspired by a Ukrainian folk song, has since become renowned as one of music’s sentimental, romantic favourites. Lyle Chan’s Entering The Palaces is an excerpt from an upcoming play for actors and orchestra, here of course in the version for string quartet. Acacia’s close friend Lyle Chan rearranged the excerpt in 2023 for the quartet. Buoyed by the successful premiere of Borodin’s first quartet on December 30, 1880, the second quartet was composed during a country summer retreat and completed in August of 1881. The work was premiered on January 26, 1882, at an Imperial Russian Musical Society concert in St. Petersburg. It was not published until after the composer's death at the age of 53 in 1887.
