Secrets of Dawn Exhibition Opening
About
Join us for a special evening to celebrate the opening of Secrets of Dawn by Coota Girls Aboriginal Corporation.Secrets of Dawn exposes the tactics of assimilation under the NSW Aborigines Protection Act (1909-1969) through the lens of Dawn, a magazine created by the NSW Aborigines Welfare Board (1940-1969) for Aboriginal people. This exhibition features historical photos and content from Dawn Magazine (1952-1968), focusing on the Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Aboriginal Girls (1912-1969). It also includes contemporary visual art and interviews from Coota Girls Survivors, illustrating the ongoing impact of forcible removal and assimilation.
Created and Directed by Meagan Gerrard (Gamilaroi Wailwan) and Alex McWhirter from Coota Girls Aboriginal Corporation. Curated by Dennis Golding (Gamilaraay), this exhibition tells the story of healing and resilience.
Light refreshments will be provided.
