Beethoven, Fantasia Opus 77 & Symphony no. 7 (arr. Liszt)This will be another tour de force from John O’Donnell who performed Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations last year to great acclaim. Liszt produced transcriptions of all of Beethoven’s symphonies. Vladimir Horowitz stated “I deeply regret never having played Liszt’s arrangements of the Beethoven symphonies in public – these are the greatest works for the piano – tremendous works – every note of the symphonies is in the Liszt works.” Musicologist Alan Walker said that Liszt’s Beethoven Symphony transcriptions “are arguably the greatest work of transcription ever completed in the history of music.” Beethoven’s Fantasia op. 77 has its own almost “improvisatory” delights.
John O’Donnell needs no introduction to our regular audiences or indeed much of the musical world. He is well known and acclaimed in Australia and overseas as an organist, harpsichordist, pianist, musicologist, and choir director including the renowned Ensemble Gombert
