Beethoven, Fantasia Op. 77 & Symphony No. 7 (arr. Franz Liszt)We have been fortunate to be able to re-schedule this recital which was previously postponed due to ill health. This will be another tour de force from John O’Donnell who performed Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations last year to great acclaim. Liszt produced transcriptions of all of Beethoven’s symphonies but they are not so well known as they might be. Vladimir Horowitz, in a 1988 interview, stated “I deeply regret never having played Liszt’s arrangements of the Beethoven symphonies in public – these are the greatest works for the piano – tremendous works – every note of the symphonies is in the Liszt works.” Musicologist Dr Alan Walker stated that Liszt’s Beethoven Symphony transcriptions “are arguably the greatest work of transcription ever completed in the history of music.” Beethoven’s Fantasia has its own almost “improvisatory” delights.
