This guide is designed to help you get started with oil painting using both traditional and water-soluble oils. Throughout these classes, you’ll learn fundamental techniques such as setting up your palette, applying layers, and refining your composition. We will also explore methods for creating texture and finishing details to bring your artwork to life.
Whether you’re new to oil painting or looking to refine your skills, these classes will provide a solid foundation to build upon. Please refer to the notes section for additional materials, recommendations, and preparation tips to ensure you have everything you need for a successful painting experience.
Classes:
Class 1: Setting up a palette, blocking in your painting.
Class 2: Applying further layers, refining your composition.
Class 3: Using glazing in transparent paints.
Class 4: Creating the illusion of textures, finishing details.
Class 5: Using actual textures, palette knife, scrapers, stencils, and sticks.
Notes:
Regular oil painters and pastelists are welcome to join in.
Nell has a full range of water-soluble oils for students to supplement limited sets.
Most regular oil paint brands produce a range of water-soluble oils, both student and artist quality.
Note: Medium for water-soluble oils is preferred but not absolutely essential.
I recommend that students buy one full-sized tube of white paint - most frequently used colour.
Students to prepare canvases to be primed with acrylic house paint. Most canvases are underprimed
