"The Crippled City" Exhibition
About
Join us as we commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University siege, one of the most intense moments of the 2019 Hong Kong protests. This event will feature the first-ever exclusive exhibition of artefacts from the protests, offering a rare glimpse into the movement. Dr. Kevin Carrico, a respected scholar and vocal critic of the Chinese Communist Party, will share his insights and personal experience of persecution for supporting Hong Kong’s autonomy. Hear powerful accounts from individuals who escaped Hong Kong during the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the 2019 anti-extradition protests. The event will also include a screening of a documentary film capturing the dramatic events of the PolyU siege, followed by a Q&A session. Organized by someone who personally experienced and escaped the siege, this event is a tribute to the bravery and resilience of those who stood for Hong Kong’s freedom. Don’t miss this powerful opportunity to reflect and remember.Admission fees AUD25.00 - All profits from admission fees will be fully allocated to support materials for those imprisoned and on remand.
REMARKS ABOUT THIS EVENTS ARTWORK
The background features a fading map of Hong Kong, symbolizing the city's decline and broken state. Overlaid on the map are splashes, representing the crippling effects and deep scars left on the city. The imagery conveys a sense of loss, struggle, and the lasting impact of the events that have shattered Hong Kong.
Dr KEVIN CaRRICO
Dr Kevin Carrico is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies at Monash University and a prominent voice on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy and independence movement. He closely observed and wrote about the 2019 Hong Kong protests, and was a columnist for *Apple Daily*, a pro-democracy newspaper that was forced to shut down under pressure from the Chinese government. His outspoken support for Hong Kong’s independence and criticism of the Chinese Communist Party led to his personal persecution, including losing access to China and Hong Kong. Carrico's research focuses on nationalism, ethnic relations, and political culture in China, Hong Kong, and Tibet. His work has been featured in *Foreign Policy*, *Hong Kong Free Press*, Apple Daily, and *Anthropology News*. He continues to advocate for freedom of speech and human rights in the region while supporting Hong Kong’s struggle for autonomy.
