Join us for an artist talk with Perth-based artist Christophe Canato.

Discover the unique artistic vision of Christophe Canato, known for his work on male gender roles, in this talk about creative process, inspiration, and the stories behind his new powerful body of work.

Celebrating PrideFEST 2024, an exhibition at the Council House Foyer Gallery features Intrinsèque, a new series of works by Christophe Canato, commissioned by the City of Perth to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ communities through photography. The exhibition will also include works by a range of Australian LGBTQIA+ artists.

ABOUT THE ARTIST 

Christophe Canato (b. France) is a Perth-based artist since 2005. His work is a longstanding examination of the male gender role in cultural contexts. 

In 2024 Canato received a commission from the City of Perth to photograph the LGBTQIA+ community ending with an exhibition titled Intrinsèque. This body of work will for part of the City of Perth Cultural Collections. 

Christophe Canato’s work has been exhibited in more than fifty-five exhibitions. To name a few; BBA gallery in Berlin 2023, the Monash Gallery of Art VIC 2021, Perth Centre for Photography 2020, the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, as well as Espace Valles France in 2018.

Selected solo exhibitions include Perth Centre Photography 2020, Gallerie Basia Embiricos Paris 2017, Anna Pappas Gallery Melbourne in 2014 and ION Art Gallery Singapore, Turner Galleries Perth, Queensland Centre for Photography in 2016.

Canato’s photographs have been awarded eleven times in France, Australia, USA, and Northern Ireland and have been twenty-seven times shortlisted in art prizes. His prints are also included in numerous public collections including Artbank (Australian Federal Government collection). Canato series are published internationally in France, England, and Australia including the Chinese magazine Photoworld with an eight-page publication, March 2020.
