Mundaring Hills Open StudiosStory and Sound with Uncle Noel Nannup
Join Us for Story – Sound and Supper at The Sound Temple!
As part of Mundaring Hills Open Studios we have added some events to honour the First Nation people, Uncle Noel says that Sound, Story, Art and Dance are all healing and his people know that.
We invite you to share in this most intimate evening with The Sound Temple Team, Uncle Noel and artist Elina El Daher. It has been designed to capture the hearts of our Western Australian people.
Our very own well respected Aboriginal Elder Dr Noel Nannup that we lovingly call Uncle Noel has a calling within his soul to speak and share his Ancient Stories with all those people who will listen. ‘It’s Time To Listen’ – is a current theme of his work and also that of The Sound Temple. Spending time with Elders and hearing this knowledge is a deep privilege and is a rare opportunity that can bring about such deep heart connections to each other, but more importantly to our incredible ancestry of this land.
Uncle Noel has walked these lands and spent many a time up here sharing in a yarning or a story. Over ten years ago he blessed the five acre property up in Sawyers Valley with a gift of its traditional name “Yunga Karak Boodja.” Also known as The Sound Temple and Sawyers Valley Retreat, Noel buried healing crystals and spoke to Dawn and John about totems animals for their boys. After time a deep trust was built, Uncle Noel also gifted permission for the land to be used to conduct traditional sound healing modalities - and so it is………
This event will commence in The Luxurious Mandala Room where Uncle Noel Nannup will share an Ancient Story with you, his passion is to listen to the natural world around him and to then share his wisdom and knowledge with everyone he meets.
After sharing a dreamtime story with you, you will be led into an hour Sound Healing Session in The Sound Temple. Our very own custom-built sound chamber that has been specifically designed for its resonance and healing properties. You will experience a total state of relaxation and this time is a wonderful opportunity to build connection to self and country and leaving with a heart filled with gratitude for the blessed world that we live in.
After the sound healing session, we will serve a nourishing supper. One way to make connections and to build community is to eat together, this is a very important part of the experience here at The Sound Temple.
In the last part of the evening Elina El Daher, one of our guest artists will invite you to contribute to a very special art piece and you will have the opportunity to add your very own gold star onto the silk, representing your own inner spark!
This year on the magnificent grounds of The Sound Temple we are hosting four exhibiting artists along with Artist Talks, Sound- Supper- Art Events and Art -Story Events.
Uncle Noel will also take this time to talk about a new fine silk art piece project that will be birthed this month and it’s named ‘Koort Boodja’ – Heart Land. Uncle Noel, artist Elina El Daher and The Sound Temple founder Dawn Steel will map out Song Lines (Journey Ways) across Western Australia and each person who attends this event will also be able to contribute to this community ‘Soul Art Legacy’ piece.
The art piece is destined to travel the South West of Western Australia over the next 2 years and will be completed at the time a very important astrological constellation happens for our traditional people, more will be revealed about this date as time moves on. As the piece of art and its team travels the state, events will be created to create engagement in Ancient Stories, Sacred Sound and Art bringing Healing to all those who participate.
On completion of its travels over the next two years “Koort Boodja’ will be auctioned off and the proceeds are deemed for the building of a Language Academy – A Knowledge Centre in the Bush, on Country for Uncle Noel to impart all that he knows about our culture.
Visiting the open studios and participating in the Mundaring Hills event is a unique experience and an opportunity to sample the lives of our local and invited artists.
In total 75 artists at 37 gallery and studio locations will be showcasing their art between Saturday October 19 and Sunday October 27 (including the two consecutive weekends).
This event gives you a chance to talk to artists who are hosting, explore their techniques, share ideas, admire their creativity and acquire a unique piece of local artwork that will be displayed in the Gallery, Stone Lodge and around the magnificent grounds of The Sound Temple.
We look forward to welcoming you!
