Mounting AAC is often an afterthought, yet it is a critical component of the safe, effective and autonomous use of communication systems.This practical, clinically focused workshop is designed for health professionals supporting people who use AAC and assistive technology. It builds essential knowledge and skills to help clinicians understand mounting systems, recognise and manage risk, and work collaboratively with teams to support safe, functional access to AAC and assistive technology.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Understand the purpose and functional intent of mounting and positioning systems for AAC and assistive technology
• Conduct a structured mounting assessment
• Identify risks associated with mounting systems and apply risk‑based reasoning, including weight, transport, behaviour, adjustability, servicing and safety
• Understand the roles of Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists and Physiotherapists in collaborative mounting assessment and prescription
• Apply feature‑matching principles to analyse assessment information and identify suitable mounting options
• Assemble, adjust and troubleshoot common mounting systems through hands‑on practice
• Complete maintenance and monitoring processes to ensure mounts remain safe, functional and responsive to changing client needs
• Recognise referral pathways and know when to escalate to specialist services for complex mounting needs
This workshop builds clinician confidence, enhances safety awareness, and strengthens practical mounting capability.
