King Edward Memorial Hospital offer this free* 3 week Parent Education course to pregnant people who are birthing with Womens and Newborns Health Services (KEMH, MGP, OPH, FBC).
RECOMMENDED GESTATION TO BOOK
We recommend booking this class in advance. A great time to attend is between 26-36 weeks.
LOCATION
This course is held at Agnes Walsh House, next door to King Edward Memorial Hospital in Q Block.
BOOKINGS FROM JANUARY 2026 ONWARDS:
This is a 3-day course for parents, which takes place over 3 consecutive Saturdays, including topics of labour & birthing, birth planning, breastfeeding and parenting taught by experienced and knowledgeable midwives.
- Week 1
Session 1 09:00 – 11:30
This session covers risk assessment and informed consent, the physiology of labour, how to understand the process of labour, how hormones and your environment influence labour and birth, signs of labour, when to come to hospital and what to expect.
Session 2 12:30 – 15:00
This session covers reframing and integrating the pain experience of labour, how to support someone in labour, pain relief options and coping mechanisms, the birth of the baby, the birth of the placenta, delayed cord clamping, perineal tearing, the importance of skin to skin, and the first hour with your baby.
- Week 2
Session 1 09:00 – 10:30
This session recaps information regarding the birthing process, and covers what happens if medical interventions are needed, induction of labour, instrumental birth and briefly discusses caesarean section (please note if you are having a planned caesarean, we have individual classes titled Planning a Positive Caesarean Birth & Baby Care - see Trybooking),and provides an opportunity to answer any questions.
Session 2 - 10:50 - 12:20
This session will introduce the early postpartum period, covering your time in hospital and heading home. We will also cover the topic of the Fourth Trimester, encompassing matresence and the physical, hormonal and emotional changes for the birthing woman, as well as touching on parenting as a team.
Session 3 12:50 - 3:00pm
This session is all about the new baby – topics include; what to expect in the first few weeks after birth, settling a crying baby, nappy changing and swaddling techniques, how to bath your baby and baby wearing.
- Week 3
Session 1 09:00 – 13:00
This session covers information and practical demonstrations regarding infant feeding, including detailed education regarding the physiology of breastfeeding, positioning and attachment, and is presented by a lactation consultant from the Breastfeeding Centre of WA.
End of workshop.
Please note: To save you time and avoid double-booking, please be aware that the same content listed below is covered in our IN-PERSON 'Preparing for Birth and Baby Course', or IN-PERSON 'Labour Strategies', our ONLINE/IN-PERSON Baby Care workshop and 'The Fourth Trimester'.
Please DO NOT book both classes as they will be duplicate sessions.
TICKET INSTRUCTIONS
You only need to book 1 ticket - this will cover you and ONE support person for ALL sessions. Support people do not need their own booking. The course begins on the Saturday listed as your booking, and the next session will be the following Saturday, and the Saturday after that (from January 2026 onwards).
When booking, please use the pregnant person's name and Medical Reference Number (see Image Below) found on your pregnancy health record.
Coffee and Tea will be served. There are no facilities to store food. There is a café on site, next door in A Block.
CANCELLATIONS
Please call the Parent Education Department on 6458 1368 if needing to cancel. Do NOT cancel via TryBooking please. Places are limited. If you cannot attend, please cancel AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to enable others to attend.
