Wounded Healer: The Lived-Experience of Postpartum Psychosis
About
Ariane Beeston was a child protection worker and psychologist with NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) when she gave birth to her first child. Days after her son was born, Ariane began experiencing hallucinations and delusions and fell into a deep depression. For months she struggled in silence – too scared to ask for help not only due to the stigma around being a mother with a mental illness, but of being a mental health professional with a mental illness, too. Eventually diagnosed with postpartum psychosis, a rare perinatal mental illness which affects 1-2 in 1000, the psychologist became the patient – Ariane was admitted to a mother and baby psychiatric ward for treatment.
Join Ariane for a raw and honest account of what it’s like to experience a severe psychiatric illness as a wounded healer, alongside recent insights into the prevention, identification and treatment of perinatal mental illness in Australia.
