Family law is a complex area where emotions run high. All lawyers have ethical responsibilities, but a unique pressure is placed on family lawyers.
In collaboration between the Family Law Practitioner's Association (FLPA) and The Piddington Society, this session is led by Nicola Jansen (O’Sullivan Davies) where she will be joined by the Hon Justice Richard O’Brien (Family Court of Western Australia) and Rod Hooper SC to discuss issues of conflicts and ethical dilemmas that arise when acting for a client in family law litigation.
Under the umbrella of duties to the court and protecting your reputation, the presenters will consider issues like disclosure, the timing of disclosures, conflicts, client expectations and how to avoid being a mouthpiece for the client.
Attendees are encouraged to submit questions.
Attendees will be eligible for 1 point in CA3 (Ethics and Professional Responsibility).
Your attendance at this, and at all Piddington events, go toward our access to justice projects. These include the Piddington Justice Fund for community legal centres; the Piddington PLT Fund for the CLCs that host Piddington PLT grads to complete their hours required for admission; and, a First Nations legal education fund. We also fund the Christine Wheeler Scholarship and John Chaney Award for new law graduates and law students.
In 2024, our contributions through those and related activities exceeded $150,000.
Note:
Practitioner ID numbers are issued by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia. Information from the Board is available here. We require these to issue CPD certificates. If you do not provide us with one then we may contact you following the event.
