Autism and the Perinatal Period

The perinatal period is a time full of change, including profound shifts in identity, uncertainty about what is happening or what is ‘good enough’, sensory overload, and disruptions to routines. For Autistic parents, the challenges of adjusting to parenthood can be magnified in multiple ways. This presentation explores some of the challenges experienced by autistic parents, how these can impact mental health, and neuro-affirming ways to support autistic parents presenting with mental health concerns in the perinatal period.Emily is a clinical psychologist. She currently works in tertiary mental health, including the Barwon Health Autism Assessment Team. She previously worked at the Werribee Mother Baby Unit. Emily has also worked at Headspace and in private practice. She has an ongoing interest in supporting autistic parents and the parent-infant relationship in the perinatal period.
