Privacy, Confidentiality & Informed Consent in Therapy

Shhh! Laying the Groundwork for Trust: Privacy, Confidentiality & Informed Consent in Therapy (Australian & New Zealand Context)

hero

As therapists, our primary goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can openly explore their emotions and challenges. This sense of safety is rooted in trust. One of the most essential ways to foster trust from the very beginning of the therapeutic relationship is through Informed Consent, along with clear assurances of Privacy and Confidentiality. Establishing these principles upfront ensures that both therapist and client have a shared understanding of their rights, roles, and boundaries. It also protects you as a practitioner and ensures legal compliance. This comprehensive webinar will provide you with the knowledge and tools to establish and navigate the key aspects of Privacy, Confidentiality, and Informed Consent throughout your therapeutic practice. It will address how to handle these concepts with various client populations and explore the critical ethical and legal considerations.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this webinar, participants will:

Understand the core principles of Privacy, Confidentiality, and Informed Consent in therapy, including definitions and key components.

Identify the essential elements that contribute to creating a trusting therapeutic relationship, ensuring transparency, and maintaining ethical standards.

Gain insight into the legal implications of Privacy, Confidentiality, and Informed Consent, and understand how these principles safeguard both clients and practitioners.

Learn best practices for working with specific populations, including children, adolescents, couples, and families, and understand how to tailor Privacy, Confidentiality, and Informed Consent for each.

Recognize the limitations of Privacy, Confidentiality, and Informed Consent, including when exceptions apply, and the ethical considerations involved.

Develop strategies for responding to breaches of Privacy and Confidentiality, including the steps to take when these rare situations occur.

Understand when and how to breach confidentiality in situations where safety or legal requirements take precedence and learn the proper protocols to follow.

This webinar will equip you with the knowledge and practical tools necessary to protect both your clients and your practice while fostering a safe, ethical, and legally compliant environment for therapeutic work.
