Kanyana Bobtail Nursing

Learn about the common problems and special needs of bobtails or shingleback lizards. This course covers handling, housing, hydration, feeding, isolation and the assessment and response to the different conditions and injuries commonly seen in wildlife care.
Topics include
• Statistics for injuries, illnesses & vitals
• Bobtail handling
• Admission, assessment, hydration and triage
• Vivarium set up, temperatures and signs
• Hospital, isolation and quarantine stages
• Bobtail upper respiratory tract infections
• Faecal testing and common parasites
• Pregnant and baby bobtails
• Correct feeding over different stages
Please note that Kanyana's procedures are discussed in detail, but they are replicable in other care settings.
All Kanyana volunteers can attend this course for general interest. However, Kanyana volunteers completing the course as part of their New Rehabilitation Volunteer competencies must have completed general, stage 2 and 3 rehabilitation competencies. They will also need an approved mentor and approval from their shift supervisor. On completion of the course, they will complete Bobtail competencies under the guidance of an approved mentor. Please note that completion of this course is a pre-requisite for Tube Feeding, Treatment Assistant and Treatment Training.
Note: Feel free to bring some lunch to eat during the presentation part of the session.
