Using DNA for Family History (In person)
Have you taken a DNA test, and you’re not sure what to make of the results? Are you confused about how all those people you don’t recognise can help you with your family tree? Join us for this workshop for absolute beginners and learn how to get started with your DNA for family history!
In this hands-on, interactive workshop, you will learn the basics of DNA research for genealogy, how to use your time effectively, how to record and analyse your DNA matches in a clear, systematic way, and finally, how to put all this together to validate and grow your family tree.

This workshop will be held over two sessions in-person at the Genealogy SA Library in Unley, South Australia.
- Sunday 14th June at 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
- Sunday 28th June at 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
In between these two sessions, you will put your learning into practice by using the record-keeping system with your own DNA results. This will require several hours of your time. To ensure you are on track, you will be able to submit your work prior to Session 2 for general feedback.
This workshop focuses on test results from Ancestry.com with some reference to MyHeritage as well for those who have only tested there.
Essential requirements
1. You have already received your DNA results from either Ancestry.com or MyHeritage, and full access to your matches and family tree.
2. Your DNA results are linked to your family tree.
3. Familiarity with using Excel or Google Sheets spreadsheet program (using formulas will not be required, but general use and navigation skills are essential).
4. A laptop or tablet device to bring with you to the workshop (a smart phone is not suitable).
Once registered to attend, please check your email inbox and spam folder regularly as you will receive a questionnaire all registrants must complete as soon as possible to allow our facilitators to tailor the program to attendee needs.
