It is based on the events in Newfoundland town of Gander (pop. 10,000) on the day and during the week following September 11 attacks, when 38 planes, carrying approximately 7,000 passengers, were unexpectantly diverted to land at Gander Airport. The characters are based on real Gander residents and the stranded travellers they housed and fed.
