Working with Indigenous Communities for Planetary Health

About
At the Co-designing Projects with Indigenous Stakeholders for Planetary Health workshop, hosted by ECU’s Centre for People Place and Planet (CPPP), we will explore ethical engagement with Indigenous communities both in Australia and internationally, how to foster respectful partnerships, bridging scientific and Indigenous knowledge systems, and developing impactful planetary health research projects. The workshop will feature a training session on Indigenous-led research, ethical engagement, and data sovereignty, with insights from Fijian and Noongar perspectives led by Dr Leanda Mason Dr Barb Bynder. Visiting researcher Mr Timoci Naivalulevu, WISH Fiji Project Manager, will share FIPHR’s work on community-driven conservation and transdisciplinary environmental health initiatives.
CPPP facilitators will discuss their experiences in international and Indigenous-led research collaborations and all participants will have the opportunity to identify pathways for future ECU-FNU research collaborations.
Who should attend:
This workshop is suitable for researchers and HDR students from all disciplines interested in planetary health. It is particularly relevant for those interested in co-designed research with Indigenous communities, ethical collaboration frameworks, and transdisciplinary approaches to environmental and health challenges. Attendees will gain valuable perspectives on co-designing research with Indigenous communities, developing ethical collaboration models, and expanding regional partnerships in planetary health research.
Light lunch will be served in the room from 12 - 1pm.
