Jessie Street Luncheon 2025
The Annual Jessie Street Trust Fundraising Lunch, held since 1989, is dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Jessie Street, a prominent Australian activist and feminist. This event promotes social justice, gender equality, and human rights, reflecting the values and causes that Jessie Street passionately advocated for throughout her life.
The lunch serves as a platform for discussing the issues that Jessie fought for, and that we are still fighting for today. Distinguished speakers, including activists, scholars, and public figures, share their insights on contemporary issues related to social justice and gender equality. Attendees engage in meaningful discussions, network with like-minded individuals, and support initiatives aligned with Jessie Street's vision of a fair and equitable society.

THE PANELISTS
Defending Democracy: Misinformation, Accountability, and Institutional Resilience
Democracy is under attack. The very foundations of democratic governance are being challenged by the rapid spread of political misinformation, the global rise of autocracies and weakening institutional accountability. How can we safeguard our democracy against these threats? What strategies can we use to build resilience in our political systems?
This conversation between eminent political philosopher, Professor Philip Pettit AC, and one of Australia's most respected journalists, Laura Tingle, will examine the mechanics and structures that underpin democracy, the vulnerabilities within Australia’s system, and the critical steps needed to protect and strengthen democratic institutions.
Laura’s skill as a political journalist will elicit deep insights from one of the world’s foremost thinkers on political theory - about the future of democracy and how we can collectively work towards its preservation.
We look forward to sharing our annual lunch with you in Jessie Street’s honour, on Friday 2 May from noon. Bookings close on 20 April.
An invitation to sponsor a school student
When you book tickets, we also invite you, as a Jessie Street Trust supporter, to sponsor one or more school students to attend the lunch. Attending this event at an impressionable stage of life inspires them to strive for social justice and to carry Jessie's legacy forward. Your generous sponsorship will enable school students for whom cost is a barrier to join us at the lunch.
